How much does a VPS cost?

A basic VPS for a small bot or API usually has a low promotional monthly price. The real cost also includes renewal pricing, backups and the hours you spend administering the server.

After reading this article you will be able to:

  • Understand what makes up a VPS price beyond the monthly fee
  • Estimate the real yearly cost, including renewal, backups and maintenance time
  • Know when a VPS pays off and when another model is cheaper

Searching "how much does a VPS cost" returns prices of a few dollars a month, which makes hosting look cheap. Often it is, but the sticker price is only part of the bill. It leaves out the renewal price, backups, the database and, above all, the time of whoever administers the server.

The numbers in this article are hypothetical, chosen to make the math easy and show the method. They are not any provider's prices; real values live on the official pricing pages (such as the ones listed under sources). Prices and promotions change often, so check those pages before deciding.

The sticker fee is the smallest part of the bill: renewal, copies, a database and your hours make up the real cost.

How much does a VPS cost per month?#

Entry-level plans look alike across providers: 1 or 2 vCPUs, from 512 MB to a few GB of RAM and a few tens of GB of disk. The table uses hypothetical plans and prices to show how to compare them:

Example Specs Price (hypothetical)
International provider, plan 1 1 vCPU, 1 GB RAM, 20 GB SSD US$5/month
International provider, plan 2 1 vCPU, 2 GB RAM, 40 GB SSD US$10/month
International provider, plan 3 2 vCPU, 4 GB RAM, 80 GB SSD US$20/month
Brazilian provider, plan 1 1 vCPU, 2 GB RAM, 40 GB SSD BRL 20/month (promotional)
Brazilian provider, plan 2 2 vCPU, 4 GB RAM, 80 GB SSD BRL 40/month (promotional)

Some providers bill by the hour or by the second and cap the charge at the plan's monthly price. Prices in a foreign currency move with the exchange rate, and card fees or taxes can add to them. Current prices are on the official pages, such as DigitalOcean's Droplet pricing.

"Cheaper" does not mean "better suited". To compare 4 GB at BRL 40 with 1 GB at US$5, also look at CPU, disk, traffic and datacenter location. To work out how much memory your project needs, see how to size RAM and CPU.

Why does the renewal price matter?#

The most common catch is the first-period discount. A plan often shows a promotional price up front, while the renewal price, stated less prominently, is much higher, sometimes double. In the table's example, the BRL 20 a month plan could renew at BRL 40. Many offers also require paying the whole period upfront, which can be one to several years.

This is not a criticism of one provider: many hosts price this way. The honest math adds the first period and the renewal. If you plan to stay beyond the first period, use the renewal price as your reference.

What hidden costs come on top of the monthly fee?#

Backups#

On many VPS plans, a server copy is a paid add-on or does not exist. Some providers charge a percentage of the server price, higher for daily backups than for weekly ones. Assuming 10% for weekly and 20% for daily backups (hypothetical values), a US$10 server would add US$1 or US$2 a month. Check the current percentage on your provider's pricing page. Without it, you need your own routine (see how to back up a database).

Database#

Running the database on the same VPS adds no extra fee, but it uses RAM and leaves updates, copies and restores to you. A separate database host adds another monthly bill. See how much database hosting costs.

Traffic and domain#

Plans include a monthly traffic allowance that varies widely between providers (from hundreds of GB to a few TB on entry plans), and overage may be charged. A domain is a separate cost in any model: see how much a domain name costs.

Security and updates#

Ubuntu Server ships with the unattended-upgrades package, which applies system security fixes automatically. It does not update your application, your dependencies or your database. The firewall, SSH, the TLS certificate and the reverse proxy are also yours to maintain.

What is your time worth in the math?#

The cost that most often escapes the spreadsheet is hours. Take an example with hypothetical numbers: if you spend 3 hours a month on updates, monitoring and incidents, and your time is worth 50 dollars an hour, that is 150 dollars a month of work. Add a 10 dollar VPS and the real cost is 160 dollars.

If administering servers is the goal (learning, full control), the time is an investment. If you just want the bot online, it is a cost. The difference between models is covered in VPS, cloud or hosting platform and containers versus virtual machines.

How do you estimate the real yearly cost?#

Build the sum with five lines:

  1. The plan's monthly fee times 12, using the renewal price if you will stay past the first period.
  2. Backups (a percentage of the plan or a separate service).
  3. A database, if it is separate from the VPS.
  4. A domain and other fixed items.
  5. Monthly maintenance hours times the value of your hour.

Compare the total with an equivalent hosting platform. For a small Discord bot or website, the math can favor the model with less maintenance. For unusual workloads that need root access, a VPS remains the right choice.

How to do this on Square Cloud#

On Square Cloud, the "maintenance hours" line from the math above shrinks a lot, because there is no server to administer. The hosting is self-service: you deploy, choose the RAM and control the application, which runs in an isolated, always-on container.

Plans are paid and billed in reais (BRL), by Pix or card. Annual billing takes 20% off, and there is no lock-in. Hobby starts at R$12.49 a month with 1 GB of RAM and 1 vCPU. The plan's RAM is a pool shared by all your applications, with a minimum of 256 MB per background application such as a bot. Databases and custom domains start at Standard, and daily application snapshots at Pro.

You deploy by ZIP upload, the CLI, GitHub or the VS Code extension. The details are in Square Cloud features.

FAQs

What is the cheapest VPS price?

The smallest plans from international providers usually cost a few US dollars a month, and Brazilian entry plans a few tens of reais on promotion. Prices and promotions change often, so check the provider's pricing page before you buy.

Why does a VPS get more expensive when it renews?

Many providers discount the first billing period heavily and renew at list price, which can be up to double the promotional price. Read the renewal price on the provider's page before you pay.

Are VPS backups charged separately?

Usually. Some providers charge automatic backups as a percentage of the server price, higher for daily backups than for weekly ones. Others sell them as a separate service or do not offer them at all, so check first.

How much RAM does a VPS need for a bot?

A small bot often runs in a few hundred MB, but the operating system and supporting services use memory too. A plan with 1 GB or more is the safest starting point.
